Bournemouth Collegiate School

Introduction

Our pupils develop self-confidence through recognising and building upon their strengths as well as identifying and striving to overcome their weaknesses. They are thus prepared to face the challenges of the changing world beyond school. Overriding everything is our belief that individual attention leads to higher individual performances.

Location

The historic town enjoys the mild and healthy climate and beautiful setting of the Vale of Clwyd.

It is situated on the edge of the small market town of Ruthin in the Vale of Clwyd, N.Wales, an area noted for its outstanding natural beauty and for its mild and healthy climate.

Often overlooked but rarely forgotten, Ruthin is a historic market town that successfully celebrates old and new. With nearly eight hundred years of recorded history, the town commands a stunning location in the verdant Vale of Clwyd.

Chester, Manchester and Liverpool, as well as Snowdonia and the North Wales coast, are close by and provide rich opportunities for extra-curricular pursuits.

Academic

Ruthin School is committed to providing a first class education for all its pupils.

Pupils are closely monitored with:

  • weekly assessment of Merits/Demerits
  • weekly tutorial meetings
  • fortnightly formal testing
  • termly Parents meetings
  • termly reports
  • supervised prep/study
  • daily report cards where applicable

The curriculum is broad-based and balanced. Sciences are taught as separate subjects throughout.

A Science and Technology block was constructed in the late 1990s and provides excellent facilities for the Mathematics, Science and ICT departments. Mandarin, Latin and Spanish are taught to all pupils from Form 1. French is introduced to all pupils in Form 3. These subjects can be taken as an option for GCSE.

Boarding

Full boarding available – including holidays.

Pupils are accommodated in one of six boarding houses – Archbishop Williams House (boys in Forms 1 – 5), Russell House (boys in L6), Goodman House (boys in U6), Wynne House (girls in Forms 1 – 5), Ellis House (girls in L6) and Trevor House (girls in U6).

Each boarding house has a resident Houseparent and an assistant Houseparent. The staff look after the pupils in the evenings, at weekends and in the half-term and Easter holidays. The Houseparents take full responsibility for the pastoral care of the pupils in their house. The Principal acts in loco parentis for all pupils and is the legal guardian for all boarding pupils.

The School employs two full time qualified nurses (one fully residential) to advise on medical issues. The school doctor visits weekly to hold a surgery for boarders.

The accommodation in each house consists mainly of single or double rooms. All rooms in Goodman House and Trevor House are single with their own bathroom.

Wireless Internet is provided in each boarding house so that the boarders can communicate with friends and family using WhatsApp, WeChat, Facebook and Skype. The connection is monitored and closed at 11 pm (earlier for the younger pupils).
